Jeannette Hartsfield comes from a family of veterans serving in all branches of the military. The daughter of a Marine Corps veteran (Lance Corporal Jimmie Dale Cusick), Jeannette grew up on Been Ridge Road (off Hwy 96) in Greenwood, AR. For many years, she fondly listened to her father’s stories of his military service (1957-1961). His stories and pride in his service to his country inspired Jeannette to also serve her country. In October of 1987, Jeannette joined the Army Reserves and served with the 978th Postal Unit in downtown Fort Smith as postal clerk. In the fall of 1988, she started doing 179 day ADSW tours at Ft Chaffee with the 5th Army Non Commissioned Officers Academy as Admin. Clerk and later transferred to the 5th Army NCOA where she completed the Instructor Training Course. She also did 179 day ADSW tours with 5th Army Consolidated Training Activity as Operations Clerk. PFC Cusick, along with her family, was transferred to Williamsport, Pennsylvania (1993-1995); Fort Ben, IN (1995-1998) and Shawnee, OK (1998-1999). In 1999, she returned to her hometown of Greenwood, AR and reenlisted in the Arkansas Army National Guard in May of 2000 as a member of the Ft Chaffee Maneuver Training Center. Jeannette worked at Ft Chaffee HQs for the Commander/Training Site Manager from 2001-2004 as a federal technician. In September –November 2005, her unit was activated to assist in the processing and housing of the Hurricane Katrina and Rita evacuees. As a SPC/E-4, she continued to serve in Detachment HQs and Billeting at Ft Chaffee until October 2007 when she was put on orders for deployment with G Company, 1/206th, 39th Infantry BCT to Camp Taji, Iraq. Upon returning to duty at Ft Chaffee in May 2009 as SGT, she was a clerk for F/E in Roads & Grounds. In April 2010, SGT Hartsfield was medically discharged from the Arkansas Army National Guard. In 2014, she joined Chapter 1 of the (DAV). From 2014-2016 she served as Adjutant, Treasurer and Chaplain until being elected Commander in November 2016-present. Commander Hartsfield has passed down her family’s tradition of respect and duty to serve our Nation’s veterans to her daughters and granddaughters who all volunteer their time and talents to serve and advocate for our area veterans.
